It's interesting coming back to University at my time of life. I have two sons who are undergraduates and here am I writing assignments for deadlines. It has been difficult stirring my brain back into life and trying to understand what is required by my assessors. I am getting more organised because I find the rather chaotic approach to study that worked pretty well when I was younger now causes stress and loss of detail. It is really good to mix with an international group of students and that is an aspect of this course I particularly enjoy. However studying part-time and living out of Sheffield add to the social distance created by the age gap between me and the others, so I feel I am not part of the group in the same way. I think the tutors have dealt with me very well, treating me as much like a normal student as possible but still showing that my experience counts. Studying in Geography is really different from studying clinical medicine or public health. The categories of knowledge and of research are so new to me, it is fascinating. I do feel I am achieving what I wanted: to work in a new direction and to understand more about health in low-income countries. Often I wish I had come to this much earlier in life, but that is a pointless way of thinking. After this course, what will happen?
